A: If your pharmacy does not carry LIPITOR, you may ask if it is possible for them to order it for you. More than 98% of retail pharmacies in the United States accept the LIPITOR $4 Co-Pay Card. Q: My pharmacy will not accept my LIPITOR $4 Co-Pay Card/My pharmacy says LIPITOR (atorvastatin calcium) tablets are not on the formulary. What can I do?

A: First, confirm that your doctor has written you a prescription for name-brand LIPITOR. Some states may require the doctor to indicate LIPITOR and write a line on the prescription slip that requires the pharmacist to fill the prescription with the name brand. These lines vary according to state, but some examples include “DAW” (or Dispense as Written), “Brand Medically Necessary,” or “Do Not Substitute.” Even if LIPITOR is not on a plan’s formulary (or list of approved medicines), eligible patients’ co-pay for branded LIPITOR may be less than half the average co-pay of a generic statin.

Ask your pharmacist to compare for you, and let your pharmacist know you want to choose name-brand LIPITOR.

Finally, it may be useful to understand that once the generic version of a medicine becomes available, many pharmacies and insurance companies automatically switch patients to the generic. This means that even if your doctor has prescribed name-brand LIPITOR, instead of receiving it, you may receive a generic, depending on your insurance plan, the state in which your prescription is filled, or on the pharmacy where you fill your prescription. These decisions regarding drug coverage are made by pharmacies and insurance companies and not by Pfizer.

Q: What are the changes with regard to the direct delivery aspect of Lipitor For You?

A: Effective April 27, 2012, we no longer accept new patients in the direct delivery option under the Lipitor For You program. Q: May I use my LIPITOR $4 Co-Pay Card at another pharmacy?

A: Yes. Current participants in the Lipitor For You program may use their LIPITOR $4 Co-Pay Cards at any local participating pharmacy.

Q: I take LIPITOR (atorvastatin calcium) tablets. What does LIPITOR going generic mean for me? Does that mean my medicine will be cheaper?

A: LIPITOR going generic means that atorvastatin calcium (the chemical name for LIPITOR) will be more accessible than ever before. Generic medicine manufacturers can sell generic versions of LIPITOR and your doctor will now have the option of prescribing either the brand or the generic. Whether you take branded LIPITOR or generic atorvastatin, your cost will depend on your insurance plan and prescription drug benefit coverage. It is important to discuss this with your doctor or insurance carrier. (For more information about cost, please see below.)

Q: Will LIPITOR (atorvastatin calcium) tablets still be available after it goes generic?

A: Although LIPITOR went generic on November 30, 2011, branded LIPITOR is still available in many pharmacies. Pfizer is working closely with pharmacists to ensure that they will have adequate supplies of LIPITOR so you will continue to have access to the same medication as before.

If you live in the United States or Puerto Rico and you and your healthcare provider choose for you to stay on branded LIPITOR, ask your doctor about the LIPITOR $4 Co-Pay Card, which is part of the Lipitor For You program. This program allows eligible patients to stay on branded LIPITOR for a cost close to that of a generic statin from now until December 31, 2014. Terms and conditions apply.

Q: What is a generic medicine? How is it different from a branded medicine? Are they the same?

A: According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a generic drug is identical—or bioequivalent—to a brand name-drug in dosage form, safety, efficacy, strength, route of administration, quality, and intended use. “Bioequivalent” means that the generic product will perform the same as the brand. The generic version may be a different color, have a different size, have a different shape, have a different taste, or contain different inactive ingredients.

It is important to talk to your doctor to determine if branded LIPITOR (atorvastatin calcium) tablets or generic atorvastatin is right for you.

Q: When will LIPITOR (atorvastatin calcium) tablets be available in generic form?

A: LIPITOR loss of exclusivity occurred on November 30, 2011. Following loss of exclusivity, generic medicine manufacturers can sell generic versions of LIPITOR. A generic version of any medicine has to be approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) before becoming available to the public.

Q: Will my LIPITOR (atorvastatin calcium) tablets prescription be automatically switched at the pharmacy to generic atorvastatin after November 30, 2011?

A: If you are currently taking LIPITOR, it is important to speak with your pharmacist, your doctor, and your insurance company to determine if you will be switched. Many pharmacies and insurance companies put in place plans to automatically switch patients to generic medicines after loss of exclusivity.

This means that even if you are prescribed branded LIPITOR, instead of receiving the brand, you may receive a generic, depending on your insurance plan, the state in which your prescription is filled, or on the pharmacy where you fill your prescription. However, if you would like to stay on branded LIPITOR, talk to your doctor.

You can also ask about the LIPITOR $4 Co-Pay Card program to see if you are eligible. This program allows you to stay on branded LIPITOR for a cost close to that of a generic statin from now until December 31, 2014. Terms and conditions apply.

Q: What is an authorized generic? Will Pfizer have an authorized generic version of LIPITOR (atorvastatin calcium) tablets available?

A: An authorized generic has a different label, package, product code, trade name, or trademark from the name-brand drug.

In the United States, an authorized generic of LIPITOR is available.

Q: How will I know if the generic LIPITOR (atorvastatin calcium) tablets will work the same as the ones I have been taking?

A: Once approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), generic atorvastatin manufactured by other companies will have been deemed to be the therapeutic equivalent of branded LIPITOR. If you fill a prescription for a generic, you may receive either the Pfizer-manufactured “authorized generic” atorvastatin or a generic produced by another company. Your pharmacist can provide more information about which version you are dispensed.

Q: Will I need to get a new prescription for LIPITOR (atorvastatin calcium) tablets?

A: If you are currently taking LIPITOR, you will not need a new prescription.

Q: How many generic versions of LIPITOR (atorvastatin calcium) tablets will be available?

A: We cannot comment on generic atorvastatin manufactured by other suppliers. Drawing on our years of experience manufacturing LIPITOR, after its loss of exclusivity, Pfizer will continue to offer branded LIPITOR and manufacture the authorized generic version of atorvastatin.

Q: How much will LIPITOR (atorvastatin calcium) tablets cost after a generic is available?

A: Your individual cost will vary based on your insurance plan and prescription drug benefit coverage. It is important to discuss this with your doctor or insurance carrier. If you choose to start or stay on branded LIPITOR, you may be eligible for the LIPITOR $4 Co-Pay Card that is part of the Lipitor For You program.

If eligible, you will have access to branded LIPITOR for as little as $4 for a one-month supply (up to $75 in savings per month, maximum of $1,000 savings a year) plus additional patient support services. Terms and conditions apply.

Q: Why do LIPITOR (atorvastatin calcium) tablets cost more than the generic?

A: Pfizer currently offers eligible patients a co-pay for branded LIPITOR that may be less than half the average co-pay of a generic statin.* The amount a patient pays for a prescription medication, however, is influenced by various factors, many determined by the patient’s third-party insurance plan. Pfizer does not have control over third-party insurance plans or over what a patient pays for their prescription.

The LIPITOR $4 Co-Pay Card is intended to give eligible patients continued and affordable access to name-brand LIPITOR. To enroll in the Lipitor For You program, click here or call 1-866-3-LIPITOR (1-866-354-7486).

LIPITOR (atorvastatin calcium) tablets are not for everyone, including anyone who has previously had an allergic reaction to LIPITOR (atorvastatin calcium) tablets. It is not for those with liver problems. And it is not for women who are nursing, pregnant or may become pregnant.

If you take LIPITOR (atorvastatin calcium) tablets, tell your doctor if you feel any new muscle pain or weakness. This could be a sign of rare but serious muscle side effects. Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions and all medications you take. This may help avoid serious drug interactions. Your doctor should do blood tests to check your liver function before starting LIPITOR (atorvastatin calcium) tablets and during your treatment if you have symptoms of liver problems. Tell your doctor if you have diabetes. Elevated blood sugar levels have been reported with statins, including LIPITOR (atorvastatin calcium) tablets.

Common side effects are diarrhea, upset stomach, muscle and joint pain, and changes in some blood tests.
